Convenient downtown location

The Hotel Imperial is located on the zocalo, or main square, or Veracruz. This means that it is in the center of activity, which has both its benefits and drawbacks. You are close to all the downtown restaurants, bars, and sites of interest, but at the same time in the center of all the exurberance and noise of the city center. My wife and I were there during Carnival and enjoyed the experience, but had to contend with the music and crowds in the area. The Hotel itself is an older building showing signs of wear. Our room was on two levels and we had to climb a spiral staircase to room the bedroom and bathroom. We were satisfied with our stay. Hotel staff was helpful.

A True Colonial Classic

Impressive colonial classic hotel, especially the Swiss cage elevator, spectacular. Stayed in a front balcony room with spiral staircase leading to upstairs bedroom/bath where we enjoyed the plaza music and action into the wee hours. Being lulled to sleep by that heavenly marimba music was a real treat. Standing in the lobby to appreciate the artisan work in the hotel is a marvel and that this hotel has withstood many a violent storm and still remains relatively unscathed. Although we didn’t experience hot, humid weather on this trip, we did notice that the central air conditioning was a bit weak, there were fans provided but that wouldn’t help much when Veracruz was being it’s hot, sultry self.

Comentarios del viajero sobre las atracciones locales

Parroquia or Portales for excellent food, service and that famous coffee experience. The plaza for evening entertainment, music, crafts and people watching. The Malecon for evening walks or morning exercise is the best. There are many souvenirs shops but don’t miss the Veracruz state artisan galleria right behind Burger King near the malecon, excellent native arts and crafts. The Aquarium is a must see, revealing the dynamics and sea life of the Gulf of Mexico.

Great location, aging dowager

The Imperial Hotel, located on Veracruz’s central square, or zocalo, still bears evidence of its one-time grandeur. However, it has not aged particularly well. For one thing, there is a 1900-vintage elevator that must be operated by hotel staff. There is no staff member assigned to the elevator - the desk clerk or bell hop mans it, depending on who is available. While the elevator is quaint, it is somewhat of an annoyance when the staff is otherwise occupied and one must wait for an extended time while the staff scrambles to the elevator and cranks up the creaky old-style elevator. While the rooms are air-conditioned, the lobby is not, a real shortcoming in the tropical weather of Veracruz. Internet access is limited to the lobby, and even there is undependable. The rooms are small and poorly-appointed. The price is reasonable and, compared to other similarly-priced hotels in the area, the Hotel Imperial is a pretty good value. It’s no longer a luxury hotel - it’s an affordable place for budget-conscious travelers who want to be in the center of downtown Veracruz.
