Excellent Choice in Cancun
We are a family of four (two teenagers) who recently stayed at the Westin Resort & Spa, and completely enjoyed our stay. We strongly recommend the upgrade to the Royal Beach Club. It's a separate building, and from what I've read in other reviews, the rooms are much nicer there. Plus the free breakfast (which is a full American hot breakfast) and the free drinks & hot appetizers during happy hour EASILY pay for the upgraded cost. Many nights we found the appetizers to be enough for our evening dinner.
The room was average size of a typical U.S. hotel room plus a balcony. Not a lot of space for 4 people but mangeable. I think the beds were just full size (not even queen) so kind of small, but were very comfortable. We agree with other reviews about the refrigerator not working well, but that was really our only issue. The ocean view was beautiful. We found great snorkeling close to the hotel. Just walk down the beach toward the rocky point (face the water and look to the right). It's on another hotel's beach but the entire beach in Cancun near the water is public property, so no worries.
Yes, some other reviews mentioned that the hotel is situated far away from all the nightlife, but we enjoyed being in a quiet location. It is one of the closest hotels to the airport, and the buses that run up and down the hotel zone are a great way to get to anyplace you want to go in the hotel zone. We would definitely go back again and have no concerns recommending the hotel to others.
Sitios para visitar: If you go to Cancun, don't just sit on the beach! While the beaches are beautiful, the attractions in the area are spectacular. Two "Must See" places are Rio Secreto and Chichen Itza. Rio Secreto is a large underground cave that was only discovered 4 years ago. You put on wet suits, water shoes, life vests, a helmet with a light on it, and you go explore the cave (with a guide, of course). It was amazing - simply amazing. There are parts of the trip where you have to swim to get through the cave. Before going I was annoyed by their "no camera" policy (my daughter has a waterproof digital camera we wanted to take) but since being there I understand why. You need both hands to get yourself safely through the cave. They send a photographer along with each group and we ended up buying the pictures in the end. Rio Secreto is about 1.5 hours south of Cancun along the coast. We saw both Rio Secreto and Tulum in the same day.
The other place is Chichen Itza, about 2 hours inland from Cancun. Wow! What a place. I read where some people are calling it one of the "new" 7 wonders of the world. Agree. The pyramid is incredible, but so are the other ruins from this huge Mayan city. We spent about 3 hours exploring the place, including some time for "shopping" at the many local vendors who set up tables throughout the site.
We hired a private van/driver for both excursions. If I did it again, I'd probably just rent a car and drive myself. Roads seemed safe enough.
